People with special needs received special treatment, full of fun, games and food.

On June 9 Veterans Park District hosted Summer Special Recreation Carnival at Trumball Park, 2311 N. Leyden Ave., in River Grove. The one-day event provided fun carnival activities geared toward people with special needs of all ages and abilities.

Dawn Stangle, special recreation supervisor at Veterans Park District, said the event was a success.

“I really wanted to be able to have something for our special recreation department,” she said.

About 150 people came from all over the district to enjoy the event.

“We had all the carnival games, it was all accessible,” she said. “We had a dunk tank. Overall it was an amazing event.”

Stangle said they were able to put the event together through a $24,000 grant from Proviso Township Mental Health Coalition.

She said the money really went to good use.

“We got a lot of positive feedback,” she said. “It was a fun thing for everyone to do. This was the first one and we plan to have a second.”
