OAK PARK — Summer is off to a great start for the boys at Windy City Water Polo.
The boys put up an undefeated 4-0 record to claim the North Beach Water Polo Tournament championship, June 30.
Amassing a 52-25 goal differential, there was no stopping the young squad under the direction of Fenwick girls assistant coach, Elizabeth Perry, and Morton boys head coach, Scott Gourley. Next up for the group will be its final league game vs. NLAA and then the high school league championships.
The high school boys team will be competing in USA Water Polo’s Junior Olympics at the end of July after finishing third at the Midwest qualifier in mid-June. Fenwick student athletes, Tommy McGuire (Oak Park), Matt Farmer (LaGrange Park), Matt Bresnahan (River Forest), Richard Mueller (La Grange), Mike Hanfland (La Grange), and Omar Calderon (Chicago) were joined by student athletes from Loyola, Latin, Curie, Lake Forest, Brother Rice, and Oak Park-River Forest to finish the tournament with a 4-1 final record. Only a tiebreaker kept the team from competing for the championship.
McGuire had 39 saves over the course of the weekend, allowing just give goals per game. The scoring came from all over, as Viken Huening (Elmwood Park) poured in eight goals, Kelly netted seven, and Troy Williams (OPRF), put 10 goals into the back of the cage. Over the course of the weekend, every player scored at least one goal. After another month of training, the boys will head to San Francisco to compete in the Junior Olympics where they hope to improve on their 23rd place finish from a year ago.
