Elmwood Park club showcases gardens

Green thumbs have popped up to show off their creations.

The Elmwood Park Garden Club will have its annual Elmwood Park Garden Walk from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. For $5, patrons will get to see some of the village’s best gardens - from flower to vegetable - that residents have to offer.

The club has been organizing its own Garden Walk since 2007, but it hasn’t always been an annual event.

Joyce Murphy, who is co-president of the Garden Club, said 11 gardens will be shown off to the public this year.

“We’ve got one garden that is solely vegetables,” she said.

Murphy’s been to garden walks in surrounding communities and believes Elmwood Park gardeners have something to offer as well.

“(People) can see what can be done with a city-size yard,” she said. “We have nice size yards with just enough space.”

Lynn Poepp, who is also helping organize the event, will showcase her garden as part of the event.

“Everything in my garden is to attract bees, butterflies and birds,” she said.

Poepp said although having a very small yard, she and her husband work to create different sections for various types of small gardens - some in the front of the home, some in the back or both.

Murphy said the Garden Walk is an opportunity for people who garden to exchange ideas and discover new ones, as well as encourage people who are new to gardening to start their own even if it means just putting a few plants in a pot.

“Gardening and starting small with a couple of plants is a good way to start,” she said.

Tickets for Elmwood Park Garden Walk can be purchased at the Elmwood Park Recreation Center.
