Walmart  to expand in Northlake

NORTHLAKE — The Walmart store in Northlake is expanding its food selection,

Walmart, 137 W. North Ave., is going through a “slight expansion” in food, said store manager Ray Apton.

“We’re just putting in some extra food and freezer space,” Apton said. “Just expanding our groceries.”

The expansion amounts to three aisles that formerly held stationary supplies being converted to freezers and shelved food. The conversion is scheduled for completion by Aug. 10, Apton said.

However, one nearby independent grocery says the expansion “doesn’t help me.”

At nearby Farmer’s Best, 23 W. North Ave., Managing Partner George Mikroulis, said he doesn’t know what the impact of Walmart’s change will be.

“It doesn’t help me,” Mikroulis said. “I don’t know if it’s going to hurt me.”

Mikroulis describes the 10-year-old Farmer’s Best as a specialty store.

“We try to be different from everyone else,” Mikroulis said. “We’re at the international produce market daily. We have local farmers we deal with in the summer months.”
