ELMWOOD PARK— A man with alleged gang ties was arrested and drugs seized by Chicago police Thursday morning, with Elmwood Park officers assisting.

Around 7:30 a.m., Chicago Police Department Narcotics Unit officers arrested Jose Herrera, 32, and seized 60 pounds of compressed marijuana following execution of a search warrant, Elmwood Park police said in a release. He was charged with drug possession. Chicago police allege Herrera is a member of a Chicago street gang.

Elmwood Park Police Chief Frank Fagiano said his department was notified by Chicago police about executing the warrant and his officers met officers at the two-flat apartment building where Herrera was reportedly staying. Fagiano said Herrera did not live at the residence, but frequented the second floor apartment, where his girlfriend stayed.

He said the drugs were allegedly kept there and taken to other locations.

“I was assured by Chicago police that the house in Elmwood Park was not used to facilitate drugs in and out of the doors,” Fagiano said. “He would take his drugs into the city and sell them.”

Police also recovered an unspecified amount of cash, but no weapons were found inside the home.
