Elmwood Park trustees accept Bennett’s resignation

ELMWOOD PARK —
Village trustees have formally accepted Alan Bennett’s resignation from the board.
Monday night’s action by trustees formally ended Bennett’s 37-year career as an Elmwood Park trustee. Bennett resigned his seat because he will move to Lombard this week, to be closer to his grandchildren and family, who were present at the meeting.
Elmwood Park Mayor Peter Silvestri said the village is accepting letters of intent from those who would like to be considered to fill Bennett’s seat until Sept. 4. He said residents can send or drop off the letter at Village Hall, to his attention.
Silvestri said he hopes to have a candidate ready to bring before the board by late September. His main requirement is someone with a positive attitude.
“I want a positive thinker with positive solution who wants to bring Elmwood Park into the next century,” he said.
Bennett said once he’s settled in, he may get involved in helping the local government in Lombard, along with spending more time with his grandchildren.
Prior to Monday’s vote, Bennett was showered with praise from trustees and audience members present.
Anthony Del Santo, who is running for trustee next year, suggested Bennett’s picture be added to the village’s Wall of Fame.
“I want to congratulate you on your retirement and many years of service,” he said.
With Bennett’s resignation, Trustee Sam LaBarbera becomes the new senior member, with 31 years on the board. Although he and Bennett had their disagreements, he appreciated the wisdom Bennett brought to the board.
“It’s been an honor to serve with you,” LaBarbera said.
“He really was a dedicated guy,” he said about Bennett’s commitment to the village. “This guy knew everything about everything.”
Silvestri presented Bennett with a watch and a plaque for his years of service. Trustees and those in the audience gave Bennett a standing ovation.
“Elmwood Park is a great community because you have strived for perfection,” Silvestri said about Bennett’s dedication. “You’ve always tried to do what’s right for Elmwood Park. You have always been there for every positive thing Elmwood Park has experienced.”
Bennett said he was humbled by the support. He said he would always be a phone call away if any trustees needed him.
