One in custody in Elmwood Park drug search

ELMWOOD PARK — Police Thursday afternoon executed a search warrant for illegal narcotics at a home on the north side of Elmwood Park.
The search started just before 2 p.m. at 2906 N. 73rd Ave, following a months-long investigation into reports of the sale of illegal drugs, Police Chief Frank Fagiano said.
One person is in custody, but has not yet been charged.
Assisting with the search was the Stone Park Canine Unit.
Fagiano said the department has spent a “substantial amount of time” developing its case, including gathering enough evidence to prove probable cause before a judge issued the search warrant
“We had that sufficient evidence,” he said, declining to go into specifics.
As the department was well under way developing its case, neighbors began coming forward with tales of drugs being sold in the alley, Village Manager Paul Volpe said.
“It’s helpful to have that community input,” he said. “It was encouraging that the community confirmed what the police department was already investigating.”
The hard part is balancing community input without compromising an ongoing investigations, he noted.
Fagiano believes this incident is an isolated case.
“The suspect is working alone,” he said, unlike police departments, which share resources.
Stone Park assisted by bringing its canine unit, Fagiano said.
“We’re very fortunate Stone Park is close by and willing to work with us,” he noted. “And as always, Elmwood Park is always ready to assist other communities when asked.”
Stone Park Police Chief Giuseppe Capece said in tough economic times, sharing resources is essential.
“Police departments in neighboring towns always help each other,” he said.
Volpe said that working relationship is vital.
“We’re able to respond to these incidents because of the resources available to us,” he said.
