Crowded race for Triton College Board

RIVER GROVE — Three seats are up for grabs on the Triton College Board with three incumbents looking to be re-elected and four candidates wanting to change that.
The incumbents are Diane Viverito, Irene Moskal Del Giudice, and Thomas Gary. The new candidates are Vanessa Moritz, Charles Fredrickson, Tom Welsh and Colin Brady. Out of the seven, voters will have to decide on April 9 who will fill three seats on the school’s board of trustees.
Trustees serve four-year terms on the board.
Viverito, who has been trustee on the board since 1995, hopes she’s one the voters choose to give her another term in office. “I enjoy the work we do there on a personal level and a selfish level because it is a pleasant experience for me,” she said.
“I feel we do contribute something to the community,” she said. “We’ve (board) done a good job fiscally and educationally and provide an outstanding product for a reasonable price across the board. I think we’ve done a good job certainly over the time I’ve been there.”
Viverito, who acts as board secretary, believes residents should vote for her because of her consistency on the board and moving the college forward.
“I bring perspective to the table and I would re-elect me,” she said. “I’ve been there for a while and I’ve done a good job I feel.”
Moskal Del Giudice has served the longest on the board, being elected to the position in 1989. She considers herself as an honest and straightforward board member who doesn’t mind ruffling feathers.
“I’ve been a trustee for 19 years,” she said. “I use to work there (Triton) and decided to run because I didn’t like the way things were being run there.”
She has no problem voicing her objections on issues as well.
“Taxpayers have a right to know where their money goes,” she said. ‘I vote no on a lot of things. It’s the arrogance that board that really aggravates me. I’m always the last to know.”
Working on behalf of the students and the residents who feel they don’t have a voice is what she’s all about and why she decided to run again.
“Nobody should go unchallenged,” she said. “I worry about the little guy out there. I have nothing to lose but to tell the truth. If I win, fine, if I lose, fine; but you can’t have the same political people up there.”
Thomas Gary, of Oak Park, has completed his first term on the board. He said he wants to be re-elected because there are some things he’d like to be able to accomplish.
