Triton grad has Chamber guide covered

RIVER GROVE — The Mont Clare-Elmwood Park Chamber of Commerce definitely thought Dinah Fabela’s art was worth more than a thousand words.
Fabela’s artwork was chosen as the cover art for the Mont Clare Chamber of Commerce Community Guide.
“We were looking for something new and fun for the community guide, and wanted to make a contest out of it,” said Chamber President Jonathan Zivojnovic. “We knew Triton College had a good program, and the product would be fantastic.”
Triton professor Andrew Campbell notified his graphic design students about the opportunity, which is where Dinah Fabela, 22, of Bellwood, heard about the contest.
“We chose Dinah’s work because it was crisp, clean, and it showcased the town,” Zivojnovic said. “It incorporated everything we asked for.”
The community guide is an annual publication filled with recommendations for businesses, letters from the mayor, resources, calendar of events, concerts in the park, restaurants and more. Zivojnovic unveiled Fabela’s work at a board meeting and presented her with a $500 scholarship.
Q: Tell me about your winning artwork.
A: I shot images around Elmwood Park and I put them together into a collage.
Q: How long did your artwork take to create?
A: The layout took 2-3 hours. The images were taken between a 2-3 week period while visiting different areas.
Q: Did anyone help you?
A: As a class, we critiqued each other. And then I adjusted my work.
Q: Where do you usually work?
A: Mostly at home on my computer.
Q: How were you notified that you won?
A: The Mont Clare Chamber of Commerce notified Andrew Campbell, who announced it to the class.
Q: How did you feel when you won?
A: I was in shock. I thought of it as a learning experience.
Q: What year are you at Triton? What’s your major?
A: I just graduated from Triton. I graduated with a degree in photography and graphic design. I want to go on to a 4-year college and major in graphic design.
Q: When did you become interested in art?
A: I always have. I can express myself in a more expressive way. I have been drawing since I was little and have kept pursuing my dreams.
Q: What is your dream job?
A: I want to graduate from Upper Iowa University with a degree in graphic design. I would like to be a layout artist. That’s someone who layouts newspapers and magazines. I like digital publishing.
Q: If you could live during any time period, when would you live?
A: Honestly, now. The pace and technology is extraordinary. I’m lucky to be a part of this era.
Q: Who’s your favorite artist?
A: Vivian Meyer, who is a photographer.
