After Anthony Mastroangelo visited a candy store that sold both nuts and chocolate during one holiday season, the magic of sweets and Christmas lit his imagination.
He decided to open his own candy store.
Mastroangelo and his wife, Mona, followed through with their goal and started Superior Nut & Candy in 1982. They opened up their first store on Belmont and Central in Chicago, and then began opening more stores around the area.
Today, Mastroangelo focuses on manufacturing the candies, nuts and chocolates. His brother, Ralph Mastroangelo, bought the store at 6620 W. Irving Park Road, Chicago in October 2013.
Ralph’s store sells candies as well as nuts. Both brothers pride themselves on selling classic candies such as Licorice Snaps, Bull’s Eyes, Gummy Bears, Paper Dots and Satellite Wafers.
“We sell old-fashioned type candies that back in the day were big sellers,” Ralph Mastroangelo said.
Superior Nut & Candy makes homemade peanut butter, an assortment of popcorns and a wide variety of milk and dark chocolates. They also have a sugar free line of chocolates and candies.
The nut menu includes pistachios, pecans, walnuts and cashews, especially for the holiday season. All of these nuts are roasted from the Superior Nut & Candy’s main company.
Peggy Finnegan of Chicago stopped into the store on Irving Park Road recently and said she was blown away with the selection of delectable items.
“I came in here looking for nothing, and came out with a bagful,” she said, purchasing candy and popcorn. “I will come back because I can’t believe the price of the walnuts!”
