A group of law enforcement and fire department personnel will be honored for their heroism in saving a woman’s life.

At least two police officers and several firefighters will receive a special presentation at the July 17 River Grove Village Board meeting.

The group was involved in saving a 56 year-old woman’s life who jumped off the bridge on Fullerton Avenue that crosses the Des Plaines River near Thatcher Avenue.

The incident took place around 5 a.m. May 22, when River Grove Police Sgt. Colin Reid saw the woman jump off the bridge. Reid called for backup, got out of his vehicle and jumped in after the woman.

He held the River Grove resident’s head above water because her feet were stuck in the muddy river bottom and waited for more police and firefighters to arrive. River Grove police officers Dave Stam and Robert Conway arrived on the scene and helped get the woman out of the water.

She and Reid were taken to Gottlieb Hospital for treatment, but sustained no major injuries.
