Some members of St. Celestine Catholic Church held mass outside at a local forest preserve last Sunday — and brought along the barbecue grill as well.
It was for the church’s annual parish picnic, which took place July 20 at Evans Field, just east of Thatcher Avenue.
The first order of business was to have mass, which was conducted by the Rev. Derek Ho, the church’s associate minister.
After mass, those in attendance remained for the other activities that were planned there for the rest of the day. Others came from home or after mass at the actual church that day, located at 3020 N. 76th Court, which Rev. Paul Cao presided over.
Cao said about 50 people showed up for the picnic. “They came out to have a hamburger, hot dog and play bingo,” he said.
Cao said getting some food and enjoying the day outdoors was his reason to attend the event.
He said events like this bring the community and the members of the church together to celebrate their beliefs as well as relax and have fun.
“Everyone had a good time,” he said.
