A 24-year-old man is in stable condition after driving himself to the hospital after being shot three times in Chicago’s Mont Clare neighborhood Wednesday.

The man was shot in the abdomen, back and arm about 11:40 p.m. in the 2900 block of North Newcastle Avenue, but was able to drive himself to Presence Our Lady of the Resurrection Medical Center, police said.

He was later transferred to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where his condition was stable, police said. A police source said the victim has a gang affiliation, and was uncooperative when questioned.

Melinda Sanchez, who lives at 2905 Newcastle Ave., runs a day care out of her home said she heard the gunshots that evening. She said she heard about six, but thought they were firecrackers.

“I never saw the police,” she said. “I knew it was close. The sound made me jump right out of bed.”

She’s lived on the block for 10 years and said there have never been any major problems there.

“We’ve had little things happen here and there,” she said. “It’s a pretty quiet neighborhood.”

Robert Foster, 57, has lived in his home at 2907 Newcastle Ave. for a little over six months and said he picked the neighborhood because it’s a safe community. He said he heard something like gunfire, but wasn’t sure about it.

“I heard a ‘bang, bang,’ but thought it was a firecracker,” he said.

Foster said the neighborhood has been relatively quiet most of the time he’s been there.

Still, there were residents on the block who say differently. Some said there are at least two “problem” homes on the block, and they believe that the shooting may be related to.

Residents, who did not want to be identified, said there’s one home on the block where there’s constant loitering in the alley. Drinking, smoking and loud talking take place into the early morning behind the home on a regular basis, they said. Residents along 2900 block of Newcastle Avenue and 2900 block of Oak Park Avenue, who share the alley, have called police repeatedly, but they only drive by, they say.

Ald. Nicholas Sposato, whose 36th Ward encompasses that portion of Mont Clare, said police informed him about incident. Police also told him that the victim was a known gang member.

As far as the partying in the alley by the group he has not heard anything about it.

“We did not receive a lot of complaints about that in the past,” Sposato said.

Police said no arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.
