Fire damages two garages, two houses in River Grove

A garage fire early Saturday morning in River Grove damaged two houses and another garage.

About 3:30 a.m., a 911 call came in about a fire on the 2400 block of North Hessing Street. River Grove Police got there first and evacuated four or five residents on the second floor of the house.

River Grove firefighters showed up next along with firefighters from Leyden Township, Elmwood Park, Franklin Park and Melrose Park.

The fire was “fully involved” when firefighters arrived, According to Deputy Fire Chief David “Dewey” Atkocaitis.

“One house to the north took some serious damage,” Atkocaitis said. “It burned up all the siding, the windows, I think part of their fence and part of the back deck.”

A house to south was lightly damaged and the siding on two neighboring garages was also burned. A car in the garage where the fire took place was destroyed.

It took firefighters about 20 minutes to get the fire under control and one hour to fully put it out. The main challenge were overhead electrical lines in the back, he said.

“It burned and fell into the alley, so we had live wires,” Atkocaitis said. “ComEd came in and cut the energy.”

A River Grove fire inspector is investigating the cause of the fire. The fire appears to have started in a garbage can next to the garage but that has not been confirmed.
