Family Friendly: Kids can get their music on at instrument ‘petting zoo’

Kids and parents can try a variety of instruments as well as hear tales about musical instruments at Musical Stories and Musical Instruments Petting Zoo.

Children will love sampling a djembe, autoharp, stadium cymbal or other instruments from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 14 or 10-11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20 at Kindermusik with Pat, 137 N. Oak Park Ave., Oak Park. Pat Larson invites everyone to drop in anytime during those hours. Young students will perform on the piano, violin, viola and cello so that visitors can hear how those instruments sounds.

The Musical Stories part of the events will be 5:30 p.m. Aug. 14 and 10:30 a.m. Aug. 20 at Magic Tree Bookstore, 141 N. Oak Park Ave. Reservations are encouraged.

“Music, stories and art all nourish us and our children,” said Iris Yipp, co-owner of Magic Tree Bookstore. “We’ve had mini-concerts in our store and this music connection seemed unique and fun.”

There will be yummy food from Elmwood Park restaurants, live entertainment, kids’ rides, games, and arts and crafts at Taste of Elmwood Park, Thursday, Aug. 7-Sunday, Aug. 10 at Fullerton and 75th Ave. Admission to the family festival is free.

SEARCH PARTY

Your young explorers have until Sunday, Aug. 10 to complete Adventure Expeditions in Oak Park’s Hemingway District, based on the book series, “Travels with Gannon and Wyatt.” They will visit six businesses looking for hidden animals and bad guys and log their finds in a Field Notes Journal available at any stop. The event culminates with a wrap-up party, 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 10 at Magic Tree Bookstore, 141 N. Oak Park Ave.

DON’T TRY THIS AT HOME

It will be great to create with your child at Messy Art Day, 12:30-2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20 outside River Forest Public Library, 735 Lathrop Ave. The program is for ages 2-10 with a parent or caregiver.

RELUCTANT HERO

An ordinary minifigure is mistaken for an extraordinary one in the PG film, “The Lego Movie.” Watch the unprepared creature try to help stop an evil tyrant, 7-8:45 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13 at Elmwood Park Public Library, 1 Conti Pkwy. Popcorn will be served.
