As part of a planned year-long celebration of Guerin Prep’s 10th year, the football team will break out Holy Cross Crusaders uniforms for the 2014 season.

The Guerin Gators will wear the Holy Cross “Crusaders” name on red-and-grey uniforms. They will be unveiled at the season-opening game against CICS-Elison at 1 p.m. Aug. 30 at Holy Cross Field.

Alumni, students, faculty and community residents are invited to a pre-game party at 11:30 a.m. that will include games, face painting, concessions, live music and giveaways.

The game also will mark the debut of new Guerin head football coach Glen Kozlowski, a former Chicago Bears’ defensive back who previously has turned around football programs at Wauconda and North Chicago.

Game tickets are $5; grade school students who wear their school’s shirt or jersey are free.

It’s been 10 years since all-boys Holy Cross High School merged with all-girls Mother Guerin to form a co-ed student body for Guerin Prep.

Holy Cross educated more than 7,000 young men from 1961 through 2004. The football team had two undefeated regular seasons, in 1971 and ‘73 under coach Frank Mariani, and qualified for six state playoffs.
