A seasoned member of the Elmwood Park Youth Commission was sworn in as its new chair at Monday’s Village Board meeting.

After more than 10 years as chair of the commission, Scott Szymonik decided to resign from the position, and was replaced by commission member Bart Smith.

Elmwood Park Village President Angelo “Skip” Saviano expressed his appreciation for Szymonik’s years of hard work and dedication as a member of the commission during the Aug. 18 board meeting.

“We thank you for your service,” he said.

In a letter to the board, Szymonik said he reached out to two other members of the commission to fill his seat and Smith decided to take it. Smith was sworn in as the new chair of the commission during the Village Board meeting.

Alan Schmidt, director of Elmwood Park Parks and Recreation, said Szymonik was a hard worker and Smith will do his part as well in his new capacity.

“He [Szymonik] put in a zillion hours of volunteer service,” he said. “Bart is going to do a great job.”

Smith, who also is a coach of one of the youth basketball teams sponsored by the commission, says that will continue to be his focus as the new chair.

“We’ll continue to cater to the youth itself, all youth programs,” he said.

He wants to continue to get local kids moving.

“We’re trying to pull them all together and give them something to do,” he said. “We want to get them away from the video games.”
