Rain puts damper on River Grove shopping center party

Despite a rainy day, local businesses in Thatcher Woods Shopping Center were able to show their appreciation for a little while on Saturday.

On Aug. 23 local businesses in the shopping center, located at Belmont and Thatcher avenues, came out from the confines of their respective businesses to throw Thatcher Grove Shopping Center’s Customer Appreciation Event. The event was to last from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., but it started to rain after an hour into the event, which kept some away.

Still, before the rain fell, the shopping center parking lot near the former Dominick’s food location in the center had various activities like a DJ, a magic show, an ice cream social and face painting.

Mila Krzyzewski, manager of the Chase Bank location in the shopping center, had lemonade on hand outside the bank that day, but weather put a damper on it.

“At around 12:30 p.m., the rain started,” she said. “That was the time people started coming in.”

Cathy Arntzen, manager of Kirlin Hallmark Store, located in the shopping center, said she put some of her merchandise out on the sidewalk. She said the event did bring people out.

“I saw a lot of new faces,” she said. “I met a lot of new people too.”

But the weather was the big problem.

“It was going really well until it started raining,” she said. “We had a lot of customers. We had a sidewalk sale and it brought in a lot of people.”

Despite the weather, she was encouraged by the event.

“I thought it was festive; it was fun,” she said.
