Yamilex Monarrez is rather modest about her high school career. The Chamber of Commerce by O’Hare (formerly the Franklin Park/Schiller Park/River Grove Chamber) recently awarded the West Leyden graduate a $1,000 scholarship for college.

“I was a good student, I think,” she said about her four years at West Leyden.

Monarrez graduated 10th in her class with a 4.0 grade point average. She also took part in Key Club (Kiwanis club for high school students), a community service club and mentored freshmen during her junior and senior years.

“Yamilex was chosen based on her outstanding academic and extracurricular achievement,” according to a news release from the Chamber.

She has enrolled at Dominican University in River Forest where she plans to study pediatric nursing starting in September.

“I want to work with children,” Monarrez said. “I find it easy to work with them.”

She said the scholarship will come in handy.

“It will help with my tuition,” she said.
