Leyden marching band delivers performance to recovering parent

Lynette Garrett figured that if her mother couldn’t make it to the marching band performance at West Leyden on Aug. 29, then she would bring the band to her.

Antoinette Garrett of Franklin Park had surgery Aug. 18 and her doctors had ordered her to rest at home. That was a disappointment for Antoinette, who has been attending home football games at East Leyden for six or seven years.

“She was really sad she couldn’t make it to my game,” said Lynette, a senior at East Leyden. “She usually goes to every home football game to see us perform.”

So Lynette spoke to band director Bryan Miller and some of band members. The afternoon of their performance, a group of band members took a school bus to the 2500 block of Westbrook Drive.

“Lynette had arranged with my older daughter to come get me,” Antoinette said. “There was something they wanted me to see.”

She went to the front door, where she found 50 members of the marching band on her front lawn.

“It was amazing,” Antoinette said. “ I cried. I couldn’t believe the effort between my daughter and Mr. Miller and even the bus driver.”
