Hasselhoff nears 60, and ‘I still look good’
Updated: June 5, 2012 7:52PM
As a teen at Lyons Township High School, David Hasselhoff won the lead in school plays, but one title eluded him.
“I was only runner-up prom king,” Hasselhoff says. “I got conned out of that one.”
He admits to being girl-crazy in those days. “I was scared of women then, but they still scare me,” says The Hoff, who will impossibly be 60 next month.
We caught up with him to talk big birthdays, the ladies and his new movie “Piranha 3DD.”
Q. What do you remember the most about high school?
A. It was one of the
most wonderful times in my life. I lived at 222 South Spring, in one of the oldest homes in La Grange. I did
do all the plays and it formed my love of theater for life.
Do you know I’m the only person on the hall of fame wall at Lyons Township High School with a C average? It is one of the biggest honors of my life.
Q. Are you ready to turn 60?
A. I still look good, but I’ve got the insides of Elvis. I’m quite healthy. I just had a checkup. What I do to stay young is work out a lot and laugh a lot. You need to keep a positive attitude. Plus, I drink a horrific amount of water each day. I’ve taught my daughters, “If you want to stay on top of your game, especially in show business, you stay in shape.” So, each day I do at least 20 minutes of cardio and I lift weights. I find my body needs it and my brain needs it. Above all, I realize that you can’t take life too seriously. You need to jump in your car, drive to the beach and talk to God. I’ll tell God, “What a ride this has been for me.”
Q. What was it like to work with Gary Busey on “Piranha 3DD”?
A. He is really nice, but you should be scared of him. He scares The Hoff. The funny part is he’s an unbelievably good actor. I was sorry he was eaten in this movie. I was hoping that at the end of the movie, it would come down to a piranha and Gary.
Q. Any chance of a “Knight Rider” film?
A. I do want to go back and make a good “Knight Rider” movie. I’m working on it. It’s at the Weinstein Co. Maybe we could put Kitt’s voice in a fish. I could be out swimming one day and who knows what could happen.
Q. Is The Hoff dating?
A. I took my girlfriend to the first showing of this movie. My girlfriend is from Wales and she liked the film. My manager walked out and said, “I don’t think you’ll work again.” My girlfriend said, “What are you talking about? It’s really good.”
