Fenwick
2011-2012 State
Scholars announced
Ninety-five students at Fenwick High School in Oak Park have been named State Scholars by the Illinois Student Assistance Commission. Typically about 10 percent of Illinois seniors gain this recognition. More than 30 percent of Fenwick’s senior class has been recognized. Local residents named include: of Elmwood Park — Dariush Forouzesh, Viken Huening and Thomas Lanza; of Northlake — William Barshop; of Oak Park — Alexander Adaire, Clare Blessen, Joseph Cederoth, Ryan Clardy, Ian McCullough, Austin Nelson and Claire Ritten; of River Forest — William Brander, John Jacobs, Daniel Kelly, Lucas Olson, Andrew Tonino and John Tringl; and of River Grove — Luke Hamilton.
Illinois State Scholar winners rank in the top 10 percent of high school seniors. Selection is based on SAT, ACT and/or Prairie State Achievement Exam scores and/or class rank at the end of the junior year. While the program does not provide a monetary award, many qualified students list the honor on applications for college admission and scholarships.
District 90
Winners: Academic
Excellence Awards
For the fourth year in a row, each of the three District 90 schools has received an Academic Excellence Award from the Illinois State Board of Education. Across the state, 438 public schools — or just over 10 percent of those in the state — received the award for 2011.
The three District 90 schools are Lincoln Elementary and Willard Elementary, which serve kindergarten through grade 4, and Roosevelt Middle School, which serves grades 5 through 8.
To earn an Academic Excellence Award, schools must meet the following criteria:
They must have made Adequate Yearly Progress in 2010 and 2011 as required by No Child Left Behind.
In schools serving grades 8 and below, 90 percent of students must have met or exceeded state standards in both reading and mathematics for the three most recent school years.
“Receiving the Academic Excellence Awards is a testament to the dedication and talent of District 90 teachers and staff, as well as to the hard work of students and the support from parents,” Superintendent Ed Condon said. “Student success is a collaborative endeavor, and I’m proud to see efforts of the District 90 school community recognized in this way.”
