A local salon showed they not only can style hair but they also have style in helping out the community.

On Sunday Zia’s Salon, 7416 W. Grand Ave., is usually closed, but owner Zija Sulo opened the doors to help raise funds for Charlotte Eitel, 39, of Elmwood Park.

Eitel has cervical cancer and has been undergoing chemotherapy. The event, Hair Today-Gone for Charlotte, raised money to buy a wig and other items to help her cope with the effects of chemotherapy.

Eitel’s boyfriend of eight years, Jeffrey Sturt, 49, of Elmwood Park, reached out to Sulo for support.

“I told (Charlotte) we were going to have a fund-raiser for her and we’ll get you wigs and help pay for any cancer expenses,” he said.

About 70 people showed up and he was able to raise about $1,500 through a raffle and a portion of the stylists’ proceeds.

“They gave somewhere between 30 and 60 haircuts,” Sturt said.

Sulo said the turnout was great and they were happy to help in their own way. He said Sturt comes in on a regular basis to get a haircut, and Sulo used to cut Eitel’s son’s hair.

“I’m glad we could help and we did,” he said. “We try to do it for all the people who are loyal to us and we are loyal to them.”

Sturt said Eitel was overwhelmed by the event.

“She was very emotional about the turnout and the amount of support she had,” Sturt said. “It was a party atmosphere and there was lots of food.”

He said the proceeds they’ve collected will be used for wigs and head wraps.

“She has her eye on a red (wig) and a long black one,” he said.
