Brush with lightning injures Oak Park woman

Updated: May 8, 2012 7:23PM

An Oak Park woman was stunned but not seriously injured Sunday afternoon when a parkway tree she was walking past was struck by lightning.

The 57-year-old woman was walking in the 1000 block of N. Fair Oaks Avenue around 2:30 p.m. May 6, when lightning hit the tree.

Oak Park Fire Department Deputy Chief Kenneth Klemm said paramedics received a call of a “woman lying on the ground” at about 2:30 p.m.

“On arrival, they found a woman lying unconscious,” said Klemm. He said the woman became responsive to questions and spoke with paramedics while being treated for possible injuries related to her fall and presumed lightning contact.

The woman, who suffered unspecified non-life-threatening injuries, was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood. Klemm declined to be more specific, citing medical privacy laws.
