RIVER GROVE — Families will come together Saturday for the annual River Grove Family Picnic at the Gazebo.
From 2 to 9 p.m., the picnic will have a music, food, games, mini golf, a face painter, magician, and in the evening the 7th annual Duck Race. The River Grove Recreation Department puts on the event as a way to bring River Grove’s families together.
“The point of this event is for families to come out and spend the day outside in a picnic type atmosphere,” said recreation co-director Jill Bishop. “It’s geared toward families to bring them together.”
Several schools will be in attendance. According to Bishop, all schools are encouraged to run a game. Proceeds to the games will go back to the schools.
“This gives schools the chance to come out, be in the neighborhood, be seen, and raise funds for their own individual entities,” Bishop said.
Food will also be provided by several businesses around River Grove such as Triton College and the River Café. Children and young adults will be excited about free snow cones passed out by Pisano’s Homemade Snow Cones, a balloon artist, karaoke and DJ, and a Zumba demo.
The Lions Club will also be holding a Golf Ball Drop. The golf balls will be dropped from the top of a fire truck, and the ball that is the closest to the target wins. This is great fundraiser for the Lions Club.
The duck race is put on by the beautification committee. Residents can purchase a duck for $5 or a quack pack for $25 (6 tickets). The plastic ducks are numbered at the bottom and will be dropped in the Des Plaines River at Belmont Avenue. The first duck to float down the river will win $500.
At night, residents can look forward to local rock band Mistaken Identity.
