Three charged in connection with Elmwood Park home burglary

ELMWOOD PARK — A residential burglary in Elmwood Park Thursday was quickly followed by the arrest of three Chicago men.
Shaquille Wasp, 19, of 1641 Nashville Ave., Damariya Shelby, 18, of 5336 W. Crystal Ave. and a 17-year-old who lives on the 1100 block of North Monitor Avenue were each charged with one count of residential burglary.
Elmwood Park Police Chief Frank Fagiano said the three men were in a car and watched a woman and her children exit an apartment building and drive from the area. The woman returned home at around 1:45 p.m. Sept. 20 to find it had been burglarized. She called police.
He said the three men allegedly entered the woman’s first floor apartment on the 7200 block of Altgeld Street by prying open the front door, exiting through the back door. The three allegedly took jewelry, a television, laptop computer, a video game and other items.
About 20 minutes after the initial call, while Elmwood Park police investigated at the scene, Chicago police officers made a traffic stop of a vehicle with the suspects inside. Chicago police noticed items in the car they believed did not belong to the men and inquired to dispatch about recent area burglaries. They were told Elmwood Park police were working on one.
Fagiano said the department was notified and the victim was taken to the intersection. She positively identified some of the merchandise. The three men were taken into custody.
Fagiano said the three are scheduled to appear in court Sept. 26.
He said if Chicago police had not pulled the car over, their investigation might have taken a lot longer.
“It’s pleasing to know our departments are able to work together in a professional and collaborative manner,” he said.
