ELMWOOD PARK — The village will participate in the 2013 University of Illinois of Chicago Urban Planning and Policy Program.

UIC graduate students will conduct commercial planning for the Grand Avenue Business Corridor in Elmwood Park. The 2013 project will target specific commercial districts to enhance and revitalize the community.

Streets involved include Grand Avenue, from 73rd Avenue west to 76th Avenue, and Conti Parkway.

The municipal planning graduate students will design a plan that meets village needs. Mont Clare-Elmwood Park Chamber of Commerce President Jonathan Zivojnovic said the project will be finished in the summer of 2013.

The program includes a projection of what the commercial district would look like renovated and could include cafes, a supermarket, parking garages or condominiums.

“The project will be going on throughout the semester,” Zivojnovic said. “So it will be January throughout May.”

The revitalization will come at no cost to the village or the chamber.

“This is all through UIC,” Zivojnovic said. “They needed an area for this project and Elmwood Park was chosen. It best suited the footprint of their program and Elmwood Park Chamber of Commerce embraced it with open arms. It was a great opportunity for both parties.”
