Businesses that are trying to be environmentally friendly now will have one more way to be recognized for their efforts.

Triton College, in conjunction with the Illinois Green Business Association, will be offering businesses the opportunity to become certified by the business association. The certification requirements follow national standards that have been tailored to Illinois.

The idea is to highlight businesses that incorporate sustainable practices into their operations.

These new green-business standards have become a part of the Triton College Sustainability Center. Fees for businesses to become certified by the Illinois association have been waived, but those businesses still will have to comply with certain requirements before becoming fully certified.

Restaurants, offices and retail industries are the focus for the certification and these business owners are encouraged to reach out to the college’s sustainability center for assistance in meeting requirements for certification.

Triton College is part of the Illinois Green Economy Network, which is made up of community colleges in the state that are working together to create a greener economy in the state.

Businesses that would like more information about becoming certified should call Triton College Sustainability Center or visit the Illinois Green Business Association website at www.illinoisgba.org.

An information session will take place 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 16 at Lake Street Theatre, 1022 Lake St., Oak Park.
