River Grove summer reading kicks off June 9
Updated: July 8, 2012 8:12AM
Children model adult behavior — both good and bad. When children see their parents or family members reading, it has a subconscious trickle-down effect, encouraging them to read too.
As stated on the American Library Association’s website, “Summer reading loss is cumulative. Children don’t ‘catch up’ in the fall because other children are moving ahead with their skills. By the end of sixth grade children who lose reading skills over the summer are two years behind their classmates.”
At the River Grove Library, we are increasing our efforts to promote family and lifelong literacy. One of the ways we have done this is by offering winter and summer reading programs for kids and teens, in addition to adult reading programs last year and this coming summer.
On June 1, all River Grove cardholders will have access to Media On Demand, allowing patrons to download e-books, audiobooks, music and videos for free. In conjunction with the library’s launch of downloadable media, the grand prizes for participants in the Adult Summer Reading program “Reading is Delicious!” will be a Kindle Fire and Barnes & Noble Nook. There will be some “delicious” raffle prizes along the way from our business sponsors such as Pop’s Place, Connie’s Beef, Gene and Jude’s, McDonald’s, the Triton Hospitality Room and more!
The River Grove Public Library’s Summer Reading Kickoff will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 9, at the Recreation Center (across the parking lot from the library). The kickoff will be a mini “Taste of River Grove” for our reading program participants of all ages. Some wonderful local businesses such as Zacatecas, Dapp’s, Liborio Bakery, Subway, Da Luciano’s and more will be providing bite-sized samples for our readers. Register for summer reading and the kickoff in person at the library or by phone (708) 453-4484.
The Friends of the River Grove Library Book Sale will also be going on during the kickoff.
Happy reading!
