Students honored in
arts and academics

Several students at Guerin College Preparatory High School, 8001 W. Belmont Ave., in River Grove, have earned recognition in the arts and academics this month.

Senior Izik Alequin placed among the 23 highest-ranked 12th-graders in the country in the cumulative standings of the WordMasters Challenge, a national competition for high school students requiring close reading and analysis of many different kinds of poetry and prose.

Senior Kim Bianco received a Silver Award for her project and a Gold Award for her paper in the IJAS State Science Exposition held May 4 and 5 at the University of Illinois in Champaign. There were close to 300 students in grades seven to 12 from all over the state being judged on their projects. The students were required to present their paper and/or project to the judges and answer questions about it. Before presenting at the state level, each student had to qualify at the regional level.

Guerin Prep’s band and orchestra competed at “Music in the Parks” in St. Louis, Mo. Orchestra placed first and Band placed second.
