RIVER GROVE — Guerin College Preparatory High School, 8001 W. Belmont Ave., began the first full day of school on Monday, Aug. 20, with a freshmen class numbering 150 — the largest class in five years. Overall enrollment is at 500.

Guerin Prep is entering its eighth year, having opened as a co-educational college preparatory high school in 2004 with the closure of Holy Cross High School for boys and reconfiguration of Mother Theodore Guerin High School for girls.

In 2011-2012, the school boasted regional championships in volleyball, softball and girls basketball and a state finalist in wrestling. Its arts program earned state recognition for excellence in band and choir. Academically, the mock trial team finished fourth in the state competition and the WYSE team finished first in the region.

Guerin College Preparatory High School, building on the mission of the Sisters of Providence — love, mercy and justice — is a Catholic learning community dedicated to the education and faith development of young women and men, where individual values and skills are cultivated.
