Businesses gird for Harlem ‘pain in the butt’

Business managers along Harlem Avenue have one word to describe the impending road construction: pain. “It was a pain the last time they did it over here,” said Juanita Mendez, who has worked for 10 years at Chavas Tacos #2, just north of North Avenue on Harlem Avenue, The resurfacing project is expected to start this week and will tie up the major thorough fare from 26th Street in North Riverside to Collum Street near Norridge through summer. Savino Nuccio D’Argento started out washing dishes as a kid at Vince’s Italian Restaurant and now he owns the place. Eleven years ago, he and business partner Rocco DeFrenza, who used to make pizzas at Vince’s while Nuccio’s hands were covered in suds, bought the then-25-year-old Harwood Heights establishment in 2001. “We’ve always had dreams of owning our own restaurant,” D’Argento said. “Rocco actually got me the job there when I was 15.
