St. Cyprian School nominated for grant by local biz St. Cyprian Catholic School, 2561 Clinton St., River Grove, has received a $500 Educational Alliance Grant. ExxonMobil awards the grant. District 212 East FBLA compete at state conference Members of the Future Business Leaders of America club at East Leyden High School attended the 64th Illinois Future Business Leaders of America State Leadership Conference held April 12-14, at the Crown Plaza Convention Center in Springfield. The two-day state conference included activities in personal development, business and leadership training, election of 2013-2014 state officers and competitive events. Results for the East Leyden High School members are: Jesse Fuentes – First place in Desktop Application Programming, national qualifier; Karolina Moniuszko and Pablo Ramirez – First place in Business Presentation, national qualifier; Anthony Diminuco, Cody O’Neal and Jimmy Wade – First place in Computer Game and Simulation Programming, national qualifiers; Bartosz Miskowiec – Second place in Help Desk, national qualifier; Piotr Galusza – Second place in Business Math, national qualifier; Avani Shah – Fifth place in Word Processing I. Avani Shah and Maja Bulka served as voting delegates at the conference in the election of the Illinois FBLA State Officers. Other FBLA members who attended the conference are Tom Kubas, Raizele Arceo and Maja Bulka. FBLA-PBL is a nationwide career and technical student organization that promotes competent business leadership training. Students of Italian take nat’l exam Students studying the Italian language took part in the American Association of Teachers of Italian National High School Contest in early March. A total of 4,984 students from 105 high schools in 21 states, including Illinois, participated. Leyden had 100 students take part. The following students placed at the national contest. Fern Awards announced Students, faculty and staff from Leyden High School District 212 were honored at the 25th annual William H. Fern Award ceremony April 25 at West Leyden High School. The awards were started by William Fern, a former District 212 teacher, after he retired several years ago. Faculty and staff vote for winners based on effort, talent and dedication. RIVER GROVE — From getting ones blood pressure checked to getting a free massage there was something for everyone at Black Heritage Council Wellness/Health Fair. The event Feb. 20 at Triton College’s cafeteria had more than 20 vendors giving students and visitors information and tips on living healthier lives. Students could get tested for HIV on the spot if they wanted. RIVER GROVE — Last week at Triton College the pressure of studying for final exams took its toll on some students, but luckily there was relief close by. It’s called the Relaxation Station and was set up last week in the college’s Student Center. During that time, massage therapists from Advanced Physical Medicine in Oak Park gave students free 10-minute massages to help students get rid of the stress that comes with finals week. ELMWOOD PARK — At Triton College, one teacher is trying to spread her love for engineering and technology by letting youth get hands-on experience. Antigone Sharris, coordinator for Engineering Technology at the college, hosted an event Saturday called “Snowbotics.” The fundraiser had a dual purpose. First, to help young people get an idea of what science, technology, engineering and math is all about in a fun hands-on environment.
