The Tigers built big leads in both of their games at home last week en route to sweeping them both. On Jan. 23, they raced past Chicago Academy 58-36 with freshman Joe Uvelli leading the way with 16 points and 10 rebounds. BOYS BASKETBALL: Immaculate Conception came into River Grove on a mission, and they accomplished it as the Knights cruised to a 75-35 win over Guerin Prep. That victory coupled with Montini’s 52-49 win over Walther Lutheran clinched the Suburban Christian Conference’s Blue Division for the Knights as they secured their first conference title since 1967.

Elmwood Park’s girls basketball team just finished a tough week. Amid losing three games on the road and playing through injuries and illness, the Tigers had to fight through sadness to play Thursday night’s game at Glenbard South as junior Gabby Uvelli’s father, Mike, died the day before. “I understand that the girls’ heads may not have been completely with the game,” said Elmwood Park head coach Brian Linhart. “News had trickled to the girls by that evening and in school the next morning. Six Guerin wrestlers advance to sectional meet at Plano

Guerin’s wrestlers went into Saturday night’s Walther Lutheran regional with some big goals, and they were able to put up a great performance with a fourth-place team finish and came away with six wrestlers advancing to next week’s sectional meet in Plano. Senior Alex Sullivan recovered from his only loss on the season to win the 182-pound division with three other Gators finishing in second. Another Gator took third while a fourth-place finisher found out he will be going to the sectional because of a withdrawal. Elmwood Park’s wrestlers opened the second season, improving on last year’s great regional performance with eight sectional qualifiers compared with six from 2011. The goal of winning the regional came up a bit short as hosts St. Patrick proved just too tough for the rest of the field and finished atop the standings with 234 points. Three-year starting quarterback Tom Senn made a huge step forward in his future on Feb. 1, as he signed to attend Robert Morris and play football there this fall. “It’s a really new program only in its second year,” Senn said, “so I have a great chance to play right away because it won’t be like I’m competing against four-year seniors. Guerin’s wrestling team finished off the regular season with some positive results last week. The Gators were able to defeat Aurora Central Catholic and Wheaton Academy on Jan. 24, on senior night before losing to Marian Central Catholic and Marmion while earning a win by forfeit over St. Edward on Saturday. The team finished 5-2 in the Suburban Christian Conference with one more win than last year and earned the conference sportsmanship award for the third year running having won every year they’ve been in the conference. Guerin dropped a pair of games last week, falling to Wheaton St. Francis and Chicago Christian. On Jan. 24, the Gators lost 71-38 in Wheaton before dropping a 57-36 decision at home to Chicago Christian in their Suburban Christian Conference Blue Division game on Saturday night.
