Three-year starting quarterback Tom Senn made a huge step forward in his future on Feb. 1, as he signed to attend Robert Morris and play football there this fall.
“It’s a really new program only in its second year,” Senn said, “so I have a great chance to play right away because it won’t be like I’m competing against four-year seniors. That was a big thing because I just wanted to play. Plus, they do a lot of the same things we do here scheme-wise offensively.”
Senn plans to study computer science with an emphasis on computer forensics when classes start in late September. He looks forward to the opportunity to have a head start on football and getting to know the ins and outs of the program and the college game before having to worry about getting into the routine of classes. He liked the school’s facilities in Arlington Heights as well and his chance to be on his own, but still not be too far from the support system that he’s always had.
His parents, Ellen and Tom Sr., who have resided in Elmwood Park for the past 25 years, are quite proud to say the least about the opportunity that their son now has in front of him. They are also proud of the hard work he put into helping make this situation into a reality.
“We’re very excited and proud,” Ellen said. “He has always had a passion for football. My thing is school first, but it’s great that he can go to school and have a chance to play because he’s always had that passion.”
“All his hard work has paid off,” said Tom Sr., who has lived in town his whole life. “With the offseason training he’s adapted himself to what it takes to succeed. How many people would get up at 5:15 to go to the health club and then go after school to keep up with it? What the coaching staff here has done the past four years is unbelievable. He came in a 135-pound freshman and turned into a three-year varsity starting quarterback.”
Elmwood Park head football coach Luis Arroyo has seen the growth in Senn since his freshman year.
“I just want to make sure they have the degree they’re seeking,” Arroyo said about guiding his players about their college choices. “It’s about getting the degree and doing so by being an athlete in college.”
Despite all this talk about the future and becoming an Eagle, Tom Jr. is looking forward to finishing out his senior year and having a great baseball season. The Tigers advanced to the regional final last year, and he’d like to add one more great memory to his Elmwood Park experience before helping build a new tradition for Robert Morris football.
