Softball: Guerin struggles against Immaculate Conception

Guerin Prep’s softball team has had hitting troubles all season long, and a date with Immaculate Conception and their top pitcher Jessica Conenna wasn’t going to help that change at all.

Senior catcher Cassidy Tarpey was able to get the only hit the Gators could manage on the day in an 11-0 loss in five innings to the Knights in a Suburban Christian Conference match-up in Elmhurst on May 8 for the Gators’ only game last week.

“It wasn’t a great day,” said Guerin head coach Andy Damato. “Their pitcher was much better than we could handle right now. We just couldn’t catch up to her.”

She worked quickly as the shortened game took just one hour to complete. Guerin batters struck out six times and didn’t have much luck when they were able to make contact. Amanda Rice got the nod for the Gators (10-12, 3-11) as the senior walked six and allowed eight hits to the high-powered Knights’ offense. The defense did show signs of improvement again as it limited its mistakes to just two errors in the game.

“They hit the gaps a lot against us, and it seemed every time we hit the ball it went directly to somebody,” Damato said. “We’re at the end of the season so we have to figure things out,” DaMato said. “We’re at the win or go home stage.”
