RIVERSIDE — Don’t expect the Elmwood Park football team to fold during its final two games.

Not even after being upset Friday by one-win Riverside-Brookfield to halt the Tigers’ five-game win streak.

Elmwood Park head coach Luis Arroyo said he expects the Tigers (5-2, 1-1 Metro Suburban) will get back on the winning track. One more victory ensures the Tigers a place in the IHSA playoffs and two wins gives them the conference championship, and the squad is hungry for both.

Arroyo said he is confident his team will bounce back Friday at home against Fenton (2-5, 1-1).

“We’re not going to change up anything. Block, run, tackle — that’s what got us where we are,” Arroyo said. “We’re going to just keep doing what we’ve been doing — it’s a recipe for success. To start inventing new things now is not us. We know what we’re doing. The kids know how to be coached and they know what they’re supposed to do. They just have to execute and play smart football.”

Two interceptions and a fumble gave the R-B offense the ball on the 13-, 11- and 23-yard lines and all were converted into scores. Arroyo stressed the Tigers must not make the same mistakes this week.

“We can’t give them the ball inside our 20-yard line twice,” Arroyo said. “The short field doesn’t help our defense. We battled with them the whole time and held them down, but it turned into a game of turnovers and we handed them the game — that’s the bottom line. We can’t do that.”

Injured senior running backs Carlos Sandoval (3 carries for 12 yards, 1 reception for 10 yards) and David Benavidez (2 carries for 16 yards; 1 catch for 16 yards, TD) saw only limited action against the Bulldogs after missing the previous game because of ankle injuries. Arroyo said he is uncertain how much the duo will play against Fenton.

“The injury status with David and Carlos is yet to be determined. It is still early in the week,” Arroyo said Sunday night. “They were sore after the game, but our trainer does a great job with getting our kids healthy — we are really lucky to have him.”

Names in the Game

Konrad Kawula Noteworthy efforts:

Elmwood Park senior sweeper helped the Tigers’ defense lock down a quality Ridgewood team on Oct. 4. Kawula also scored the game’s lone goal for Elmwood Park, beating the Rebels’ goalkeeper on a penalty kick. The team’s 1-0 win over Ridgewood was its lone victory of the week. The Tigers tied Proviso East, 3-3, on Oct. 2, and fell 3-1 to Willowbrook on Oct. 6.

Rocco Lepore Noteworthy efforts:

Elmwood Park runner Rocco Lepore finished 15th at Oct. 4’s Elmwood Park Invite, which was the Tigers’ final meet of the regular season. Lepore, a junior, finished the three-mile course in 17:03. Elmwood Park (105 points) finished fourth out of 13 teams at the meet, which was an encouraging result for cross country coach John Kingsmill.

Quick Hits

Big Numbers

23 | Riverside-Brookfield upset Elmwood Park (5-2, 1-1 Metro Suburban Conference) Friday night, largely because of their ability to convert turnovers to points. The Bulldogs beat Elmwood Park 23-7, and all 23 of the Bulldogs’ points came off of turnovers. Running back David Benavidez scored the Tigers’ lone touchdown of the game when he caught a 16-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Patrick McNulty.

Sound Bites

“If they have tryouts, I’ll probably try out. At this point, I’m not ready for (Division I golf). I’m consistently in the low 80s and I had one 79 this summer. That probably wouldn’t cut it D-I, but I’m going to try out and I’m going to keep working at it. I’ve got one more season and then college, so ...”

— Elmwood Park golfer Mike Godlewski, on his plans to try to play golf in college.

Don’t Miss

Saturday

Cross Country: at MSC Championship (Sundown Meadows), 9 a.m.

Elmwood Park cross country coach John Kingsmill will demand a stronger effort from his girls squad, which finished ninth out of 13 teams at Oct. 4’s Elmwood Park Invite, on Oct. 13. Bree Ziegler was the team’s top runner at its own invite. Ziegler finished in 19:57, which was good enough for 15th overall.

Tuesday

Volleyball: Glenbard South at Elmwood Park, 5:30 p.m.

The Elmwood Park girls volleyball team will honor its large senior class on Oct. 16. The team’s seniors include: Lynette Betancourt, Indigo Bruno, Danielle DiCristofano, Jasmine Moctezuma, Monika Pszczola, Jessica Rippel, Becca Schmidt and Amanda Tillich. The Tigers will travel to Bensenville one day later and wrap their regular season against Fenton.
