ELMHURST — Saturday’s gloomy weather didn’t rain on the Dukes’ parade.

Despite wet conditions that moved the York sectional from the outdoor courts at Berens Park to indoors at Courts Plus, the York girls tennis team cruised to its seventh consecutive sectional title, scoring 36 points.

Duke standout Maria Avgerinos won her third straight singles title in commanding fashion, defeating teammate Annie Rivera 6-0, 6-0.

The senior never dropped a game throughout her entire sectional appearance and is geared to make a top-16 run at the state meet, which begins on Thursday.

“She’s playing at a high level right now,” York coach Tres Heimann said. “She’s really worked hard at it. She’s very motivated, very determined.

“Her serve, she’s serving huge right now, better than I’ve seen her serve before,” the fourth-year coach said.

The Dukes also advanced both its doubles teams to state hosted by Buffalo Grove High School.

Battling for the doubles title were tandems Gabby Riek-Ellen Barry against Maria’s younger sister Angela Avgerinos and Blaire Porter.

It was York’s No. 2 doubles duo of Avgerinos and Porter who took the crown with a 6-2, 7-5 victory.

The Dukes (16-11, 3-3) finished third in the West Suburban Silver, and the memories of Maria Avgerinos’ semifinal loss haven’t faded. Maria Avgerinos dropped a tight, 4-6, 6-3 (11-9) match to conference champion Alex Chatt from Lyons.

After finishing in the top-32 and earning all-state honorable mention last year, Syracuse-bound Avgerinos wants to leave everything on the court.

“I’m a little nervous because I want to do better than in years past, but I have to set those nerves aside,” Avgerinos said. “It’s kind of just to go for it. It’s your last year, and you want to leave your mark.”
