Hinsdale Central, Junge, Kelsey earn rain-shortened 3A state titles

BLOOMINGTON — Hope was in the air Saturday morning at The Den at Fox Creek, but heavy rain washed it away and forced the IHSA to cancel the second round of the 3A boys golf state tournament.
Play started at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start but was postponed nearly an hour later. Around noon, the IHSA decided to cancel the round. Scores from Friday’s first round became the official final standings.
Hinsdale Central won the state championship with an 18-over 306. It was the program’s first title since the 1960-61 school year.
New Trier’s Jack Junge and Deerfield’s Ian Kelsey shared medalist honors after both shot 1-under 71s.
“I am disappointed we didn’t get to play the full 36 holes, but I’ll still take it,” said Kelsey, a junior and Deerfield’s first-ever state champion.
Junge was New Trier’s first state champion since Mike Slaven in 1999. The sophomore birdied four of his final six holes Friday to put himself alongside Kelsey atop the leaderboard.
“I was nervous, but I thought if I could play well (Friday), I could play well (Saturday),” Junge said.
This year was the third time the IHSA shortened the boys golf state tournament, the last coming in 2001. The other time was in 1993.
Hinsdale Central was led by sophomore Brian Dolehide, who tied for fifth following his 74. Senior David Whinery followed with a 75, while freshman Kenneth Li shot 76. Junior Jeff Yoo rounded out the championship foursome with an 81.
“I wanted to help take the pressure off of our other players,” said Whinery, the only senior in the six-player lineup. “I knew we could do it.”
Naperville North (308) and Lyons (309) also earned state medals. Glenbrook North, a pre-tournament favorite, finished fourth at 310.
Glenbrook North juniors Nick Hardy and Brian Ohr both tied for ninth with 75s, along with Whinery.
“It’s like a bad bounce on a cart path,” Spartans coach Justin Gerbich said. “Not a whole lot you can do about it. The kids should be proud of the season they had.”
In 1A, the IHSA also called off the second round at Prairie Vista, enabling North Shore Country Day to defend its state championship with a 313. Senior Nick McCall won his first state title after shooting a 2-under 70.
