Notre Dame advances to state cross country meet

BENSENVILLE — The 15th-ranked team in Marc Bloom’s Running Times national poll showed why it is held in such high esteem Saturday morning.

Jones, which had five of the top six finishers in the Class 2A Fenton boys cross country sectional, cruised to an easy win over Fenton, finishing with 17 points. The host school had 72 points and placed four runners in the top 20.

“I didn’t think I was going to get it at the end,” said Jones senior Luke O’Connor, who won the race in 15 minutes, 16.37 seconds. “I don’t usually have strong kicks at the end, so it was a little worrisome, but I’m glad I pulled it out at the end.”

St. Viator, which had two runners finish in the top-10, finished with 84 points, while Mather had 113 and Notre Dame rounded out the top five with 144 points. All five schools advanced to the state meet, which is scheduled for Nov. 3 in Peoria.

Other individual finishers in the top five were Jones’ Jamison Dale (15:24.73), Jones’ Kirby Lawson (15:28.45), St. Viator’s Nick Brey (15:35.95) and Jones’ Peter Schaible (15:38.31). Kyle Maloney (15:39) was Jones’ fifth runner and took sixth.

Other advancing individuals included Dan O’Keefe (Mount Carmel, 16:10.22). Jacob Meyer (U-High, 16:43.71), Anthony Campanaro (St. Patrick, 16:51.2), Alex Bermudez (Little Village, 17:00.47), Ricky Wojcik (Elmwood Park, 17:00.76), Max Volchenboum (U-High, 17:01.95) and Joshuah Hernandez (Bulls Prep, 17:07.2).

Elmwood Park finished sixth in the team race with 190 points.
