RIVER GROVE — Guerin is moving up the ranks of the IHSA and not showing any signs of slowing down.
Following last year’s Class 2A regional championship win over Woodlands, the Gators learned they would be bumped up to Class 3A for the 2012 season.
It turned out that not only did the Gators move up a class, they moved up in class.
The No. 4 Gators (17-13) altered their defense and secured their second straight regional championship with a 25-17, 25-8 victory against No. 5 Westinghouse (17-4) Oct. 25 at home.
“To me, this was harder to do because to do a two-peat is very difficult,” said coach Dominic DiSilvio. “You have to really stay focused and I give the girls all the credit in the world for doing that.”
DiSilvio’s players agree winning this year’s crown was more enjoyable.
“We were a little unfocused last year,” said junior Rebecca Bartnicki. “We’ve gotten a lot better and with this regional championship, we had a lot more fun.”
The competition level was noticeably higher and senior Alex Bojan wishes she could experience more of it.
“I think we were down more in the beginning of the season, but now we’re starting to pick it up,” said Bojan. “It (stinks) that this is the only and last time we can (play in 3A).”
DiSilvio hopes the IHSA doesn’t bump the team up again.
“Hopefully not,” said DiSilvio. “We’re not ready for 4A yet. We’re getting there and our program is getting better all of the time and this is going to help us out even more.”
The Gators were scheduled to travel to the Orr sectional and face No. 1 Latin in the semifinals Tuesday. Guerin already lost to the Romans 26-24, 25-17 on Sept. 20.
