Guerin comes back against Latin, advances to sectional final

CHICAGO — In a third-set thriller, the Guerin volleyball squad survived to see another game.

Guerin (18-13) upset first-seeded Latin (21-7), 14-25, 25-22, 25-23, Tuesday evening in the 3A Orr sectional semifinals.

Seniors Alex Bojan and Amanda Middleton posted a kill block that set their team up for match point, and Latin’s Catie Cronister had a hitting error that handed Guerin a ticket to the championship match.

“We were always pushing one by one, and we just really wanted to beat Latin to get to sectional finals,” junior Rebecca Bartnicki said.

The Romans pounded the Gators in the first set, building a 17-9 lead that only grew wider. Freshman Cronister led the Romans in the set with five kills and an ace, and sophomore Isabela Sessions added four kills and two aces.

“They just destroyed us the first game because of (my team’s) butterflies, and they took advantage of that,” Guerin coach Dominic DiSilvio said. “We came back, and we started fighting, and that’s what helps us.”

The Gator’s blocks came up big, with five hitters recording a total of 10 kill blocks. Bartnicki had three of those, along with six kills, and senior Sara Brodner added two kill blocks and a team-high seven kills.

They also committed only three service errors, opposed to the Roman’s eight.

“When you miss that little amount of serves, it makes a big, big difference,” DiSilvio said.

The two teams met once during the regular season in late September, when the Romans won 26-24, 25-17.

Fourth-seeded Guerin will take on third-seeded Resurrection, hoping to win its first sectional title.
